Atoms are neutrally charged because they have the same number of positive charges (protons) as negative charges (electrons). When the atom gains or loses one or more electrons it becomes an ion. For example, if it loses one electron it becomes an ion with a charge of +1 whereas if it gains two electrons it becomes in ion with a charge of 2-.
