Physics Words: National Grid

Simple Description

A system of transformers and cables that sends electricity around the UK

Further Detail

The National Grid sends electricity from power stations around the UK. The voltage from the power stations is "stepped up" using a step up transformer and transmitted at a voltage of around 400,000V. This increase in voltage causes a reduction in current, which reduces energy loss through heating the wires. It is then "stepped down" again by a step down transformer before being put into our homes.
