Oscilloscopes can be used to display sound waves or electrical signals on a screen and work out the frequency of the signal. To work out the frequency, follow these steps:
1) Work out the time period of the wave by counting how many squares long the wave is and multiplying this by the time base
2) Calculate the frequency by doing 1/time period
