Step down tranformers have less coils on the secondary coil then they do on the primary coil. They decrease the voltage by the same factor as the number of turns decreaes by. For example, if a step down transformer has half as many turns on its secondary coil compared to its primary coil then it will halve the voltage. The formula for calculating the decrease in voltage is:
